Democratizing Islam Or Islamizing Democracy? Reflection On The Indonesian Experience

Salle Maurice et Denys Lombard  -  96, bd Raspail  -  75006 Paris
"Muslim political actors do know that the democratic political system provides advantages to pursue their interests, yet they are willing to adopt democracy only after they are able to reformulate it in Islamic terms. Therefore, in order to advance democratic politics among the Muslim community, democratic ideas have to be translated into meaningful Islamic concepts. Muslim democrats in Indonesia have been successful in islamizing democratic ideas pertaining to cultures and mobilizations, but they are still struggling in dealing with public policies and administrations."
