Catholic Missions and the Definition of Cultural Boundaries in the Early-Modern World.

EHESS,  -  105 bd Raspail, salle 5  -  75006 Paris
This talk will discuss current historical scholarship and the work of social scientists on the issue of cultural boundaries. It will offer a model for understanding how early-modern Europeans drew cultural boundaries through religious difference, and how these boundaries shaped religious communities and relations between communities, especially in mixed confessional communities.  It will also suggest how this process of drawing religious boundaries changed when early-modern Catholicism moved overseas.
