  • Childbirth in Nepal: Some Numbers and Narratives,  lundi 9 février 2009 de 11 h à 13 h, 105 bld Raspail, salle 8
In this talk, I present some preliminary results from an ongoing ethnographic study I have been conducting on childbirth in Nepal. First, I share some statistics regarding age at marriage and at first birth, pregnancy outcomes, birth locations, and the presence or absence of traditional birth attendants for women in the village of Junigau, Nepal.
After discussing these numbers, I go on to present some excerpts from the women’s narratives of childbirth in order to explore some of the personal, social, and cultural meanings surrounding childbirth in the village. I conclude with some remarks on the dramatic social changes that have been occurring in Nepal over the past few years — changes that have had an impact on childbirth practices, on women’s conceptions of their own bodies, and on their ideas about themselves as females, as mothers, and as social agents.
