George E. Marcus is Chancellor's Professor of Anthropology at the University of California, Irvine, where he is also Director of the Center for Ethnography (www.socsci.uci.edu/~ethnog/). Previously, for 25 years, he was head of the anthropology program at Rice University.
He is a major contemporary anthropologist, whose influence in a shift on a broad scale in the research interests of social and cultural anthropology through the 1980s and 1990s is widely acknowledged.
He founded the journal Cultural Anthropology. He created and edited the Late Editions series of annuals of the University of Chicago Press through the 1990s. He co-edited the volume Writing Culture (1986) with James Clifford, and co-wrote Anthropology as Cultural Critique (1986) with Michael Fischer. In 1998, he published Ethnography Through Thick & Thin; in 2008, Designs for an Anthropology of the Contemporary (with Paul Rabinow, James Faubion, and Tobias Rees); and in 2009, with James Faubion, Fieldwork Is Not What It Used To Be. Mostly recently, he has participated in the team ethnography project on the World Trade Organization, directed by Prof. Marc Abeles.
He will be Marc Abélès' distinguished guest in his seminar "Anthropologie de la globalisation : tendances et tensions" and will give a talk entitled Challenges to the Ethnographic Study of Globalization and Changing Forms of Anthropological Knowledge.
